The founder of Hayley's Vintage Clothing and Jewelry, Hayley Ninnis has an undergraduate degree in psychology and is enrolled in a Master’s in Leadership Development program at Penn State University. Hayley Ninnis has an strong interest in the “power of influence” and the way in which it translates into success when launching a business. With influence defined as the application of power in ways that achieve specific goals, it has a number of positive manifestations that include socializing and logical persuading. The latter involves explaining a belief or desired action in a way that appeals to a individual’s rational side and gets the person involved in a project through their own free will and desire to make it happen. An offshoot of this is exchanging, through which negotiation and trading are used in order to gain cooperation. Most effective when presented in an implicit manner, exchanging can sometimes work in situations in which agreement would otherwise be impossible. Another means of influence is legitimizing, which involves an appeal to authority. Not always desirable or effective, it can generate quick compliance in certain situations. A more effective version of legitimizing typically involves building up one’s own legitimacy through asserting a belief or objective in a compelling manner. This form of influence involves maintaining a persuasive sense of self-confidence, coupled with impeccable logic, although it can also lead to resistance if overused.
