With an entrepreneurial background as founder of Hayley's Vintage Clothing and Jewelry, Hayley Ninnis is a Penn State University graduate student pursuing studies in leadership development. Among Hayley Ninnis’ passions is music, and she collects vinyl records by artists such as Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, and Radiohead. One of the most critically acclaimed vinyl album releases of 2017 was Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool. A Pitchfork review lauded the album as both a move by Thom Yorke beyond the confines of cynicism and as a recognition of the way in which “profundity can slip into banality.” The music foregoes a sense of angst for a sense of helplessness that is at once universal and profoundly personal, perhaps related to the breakup of Yorke with his longtime partner. Along with the new compositions is a recasting of old ones, with opener “Burn the Witch” having been composed during the Kid A/Amnesiac era. Containing lines such as “this is a low-flying panic attack” that hearken back to the Radiohead of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the song presents a message that seems prescient and relevant to the present. |
