Hayley Ninnis earned her associate degree in psychology at Delaware County Community College, and in 2014 she began a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Penn State University. When she is not studying, Hayley Ninnis spends her free time on a diverse range of hobbies, including decorating cakes. Cake decorating has been around since the 17th century and continues to evolve. While nowadays there are many different techniques to decorate cakes, including the use of LED lights and photo printers, beginners can still use simple household materials and ingredients. For those who want to try their hand at cake decorating, here are some tips to make the designs more beautiful: 1. Use a plastic cookie cutter as a cake topper. Fill it with sprinkles to make it more colorful. 2. Place a piece of lace on top of the cake, and sprinkle some powdered sugar over it to create different patterns. 3. Mix Jell-O and frosting to create unique, vibrant colors for your cake. 4. Perfect the design by applying frosting on wax paper first. Let it harden, peel it, and place it on top of the cake. 5. Create faux-fondant icing to decorate cakes in minutes. Microwave store-bought icing, and pour it over the cake. Refrigerate the cake.

Decorating a cake skillfully begins with knowledge of the piping techniques used to create patterns such as lines, ruffles, petals, and rosettes. Buttercream without shortening is the best ingredient for piping, as it is smudge resistant and easy to work with and hardens when chilled. Once placed in the piping bag, the icing or buttercream should be gently squeezed to remove trapped air bubbles, before it is tied off at the end. A sign of proper consistency is that the icing does not break when piped between the fingers and given a small shake. If the icing is too dry, simply add water, and if too wet, add a bit of powdered sugar. When piping, do not force the lines but let gravity do the work in drawing the buttercream down onto the cake. Keeping the tip of the piping bag off the cake surface, gently guide the string of icing in the desired direction. For those with unsteady hands, it makes sense to find a comfortable position with the elbows on the table or countertop, which provides support. An artist active in multiple media, Hayley Ninnis recently expanded into furniture restoration. Currently at work on a White Sewing Machine, Hayley Ninnis has chosen to decoupage the interior using vintage French patterns.
Decoupage, the art of decorative paper cutting, can add new life to an old piece of furniture. The process begins with choosing the wrapping paper, wallpaper, or scrapbook paper that will go onto the piece. Next, thoroughly clean the piece and, depending on its size, trace its dimensions onto a piece of ordinary paper. Using the template, trace and cut out the section of decorative paper that will go onto the furniture. Those who are making a collage with multiple types of paper or are planning to use the paper as accents on a painted piece can use the cutout to first arrange the paper before committing it to the furniture. If the decorative paper is meant to cover the entire face of the furniture, a small amount should overlap on all sides. Then, attach the paper to the table with decoupage glue, and smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles with a foam roller or credit card. Some people also choose to soak the paper in water beforehand for ease of application. After sanding any exposed edges to remove the overlapping paper and make the piece look polished, apply a coat of sealer as a finishing touch. |
