Although many people view yoga as a form of physical therapy and exercise, it can also serve as meditation. The history and development of yoga are rooted in exercising the mind, spirit, and body. Historians believe yoga moves stem from ancient asana practices meant to prepare the body for meditation. The first step in transforming yoga sessions into meditation is to choose a mantra. This mantra could be a word or phrase representing goals, assurances, or any other purposeful intention. The next step is to focus on breathing. Adopting breathing exercises during stretches has soulful benefits as well as physical ones. Here the intention is to slowly inhale and exhale through the nose, releasing stress and overburdening thoughts with every exhale. This technique is called the ujjayi breath meaning ocean or victorious breath. Furthermore, it is vital to take sessions slowly. Yoga is a relaxing endeavor that one should not rush through. Switch poses and positions slowly in a manner that comes naturally to you.
