With a lifelong passion for vintage items, Hayley Ninnis has a job in the memorabilia industry and serves as customer service representative with Hunt Auctions. A recent auction that Hayley Ninnis supported was that of Babe Ruth’s iconic New York Yankees jersey, which he wore from 1928 to 1930. Crafted from grey flannel, the road uniform has all of its buttons intact and a backside drawstring, with the name Ruth stitched into the collar. The jersey was owned by Ruth's granddaughter Linda Ruth Tosetti, who described wanting to bring pieces of the Sultan of Swat’s life that were “largely unknown” to public light. Considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time, Ruth started as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox and went on to achieve greatness as a power hitter who led the Yankees to four World Series championships in the 1930s. Over the course of 22 seasons he achieved 714 home runs, a record that stood until Hank Aaron outpaced him in the 1970s. Considering Ruth’s mythic status in baseball lore, collectors were not surprised to see the iconic Yankees uniform go for $5.64 million, which shattered the previous record for a 1920 Babe Ruth jersey that auctioned for $4.4 million.

Among Hayley Ninnis’ passions is music, and she collects vinyl records by artists such as Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, and Radiohead. One of the most critically acclaimed vinyl album releases of 2017 was Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool. A Pitchfork review lauded the album as both a move by Thom Yorke beyond the confines of cynicism and as a recognition of the way in which “profundity can slip into banality.” The music foregoes a sense of angst for a sense of helplessness that is at once universal and profoundly personal, perhaps related to the breakup of Yorke with his longtime partner. Along with the new compositions is a recasting of old ones, with opener “Burn the Witch” having been composed during the Kid A/Amnesiac era. Containing lines such as “this is a low-flying panic attack” that hearken back to the Radiohead of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the song presents a message that seems prescient and relevant to the present. A certified yoga instructor, Hayley Ninnis completed 200 hours of training in Vinyasa power yoga at Power Yoga Works in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Hayley Ninnis is also enrolled in a master’s program in leadership development at Penn State University. Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, the master’s program in leadership development at the Great Valley Graduate Center at Penn State teaches students to nurture both their own leadership potential and that of others to bring about positive change. The program addresses leadership at various stages of life and in various areas, from the corporate world to the nonprofit sector. Throughout the 36-credit program, students develop competency in a variety of skill set areas, including strategic thinking, character strength, persuasive communication, team building, and innovation. Students graduate not only with competency in these areas, but also with a set of actionable behaviors that will help them foster leadership in the people around them and transform the organizations they serve. Hayley Ninnis has an strong interest in the “power of influence” and the way in which it translates into success when launching a business. With influence defined as the application of power in ways that achieve specific goals, it has a number of positive manifestations that include socializing and logical persuading. The latter involves explaining a belief or desired action in a way that appeals to a individual’s rational side and gets the person involved in a project through their own free will and desire to make it happen. An offshoot of this is exchanging, through which negotiation and trading are used in order to gain cooperation. Most effective when presented in an implicit manner, exchanging can sometimes work in situations in which agreement would otherwise be impossible. Another means of influence is legitimizing, which involves an appeal to authority. Not always desirable or effective, it can generate quick compliance in certain situations. A more effective version of legitimizing typically involves building up one’s own legitimacy through asserting a belief or objective in a compelling manner. This form of influence involves maintaining a persuasive sense of self-confidence, coupled with impeccable logic, although it can also lead to resistance if overused. A fan of art and music, Hayley Ninnis explores many avenues of expression. These include playing her Fender acoustic guitar, an instrument Hayley Ninnis has recently purchased.
Purchasing an acoustic guitar can feel overwhelming, especially when just starting out. When shopping for an acoustic guitar, individuals should consider selecting an instrument made of materials that best suit their preferred style of play. The top of an acoustic guitar is most often made of spruce. Many people like spruce for its ratio of strength to weight, a factor that makes guitars constructed with this material a good selection for flat-picking and hard playing. Cedar, also used commonly in guitar tops, has different qualities. It works best with lighter playing styles, such as fingerpicking, as the wood is of a softer quality. However, cedar and spruce wood are not a person’s only options. Some guitars use synthetic materials, such as graphite and fiberglass composite. While many people prefer natural wood, synthetic materials tend to stand up well to climatic factors. A guitar expert can walk a person through the different types of acoustic guitars and their key qualities. Any vinyl record owner who wants to preserve his or her collection for the future needs to be familiar with a few key vinyl care tips. One of the simplest, most effective ways to care for a record is to store it correctly. Vinyl should always be kept away from extremely hot or cold temperatures to prevent warping, and should never be stacked horizontally. Instead, albums should be stored vertically, with external plastic slips around the album cover for extra protection. When a record is removed from its sleeve, it should only be touched around the edges and on the label to avoid leaving dirt or oils behind on the vinyl’s surface. The album should also be cleaned prior to playing it on a turntable and before it is returned to its sleeve after use. This will help prevent scratches and other damage caused by dust. It is important to remember that vinyl should only be cleaned with a brush specifically designed to clean records or with a soft microfiber pad. Follow these instructions, and vinyl records will last for decades, allowing their tunes to be enjoyed by generations. In her free time, Hayley Ninnis enjoys glassblowing, and has taken several courses at East Falls Glassworks. She is also an avid collector of vinyl records. Since the rise of vinyl records, music lovers have been investing in record players. Record players look and sound cool, but they do require proper maintenance. First of all, like most electronics, record players can be damaged by water, so they should be kept in a safe location. They are also negatively affected by sunlight and extreme temperatures. The record player should be cleaned regularly. Wooden players can be maintained with furniture polish, while plastic versions can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The actual turntable, platter, and tonearm should also be cleaned and dusted regularly to avoid dust buildup, which can adversely affect the quality of the sound and damage the components over time. In addition to keeping the record player in good condition, make sure to keep records inside sleeves and clean them lightly if they have a grimy buildup. While nowadays there are many different techniques to decorate cakes, including the use of LED lights and photo printers, beginners can still use simple household materials and ingredients. For those who want to try their hand at cake decorating, here are some tips to make the designs more beautiful: 1. Use a plastic cookie cutter as a cake topper. Fill it with sprinkles to make it more colorful. 2. Place a piece of lace on top of the cake, and sprinkle some powdered sugar over it to create different patterns. 3. Mix Jell-O and frosting to create unique, vibrant colors for your cake. 4. Perfect the design by applying frosting on wax paper first. Let it harden, peel it, and place it on top of the cake. 5. Create faux-fondant icing to decorate cakes in minutes. Microwave store-bought icing, and pour it over the cake. Refrigerate the cake. |
